Thank you for visiting my site. I grew up in Lexington, Mass. and I've been a photojournalist since graduating from the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University in 1980. I spent a semester studying photojournalism in London when I was a junior at SU. That's where I fell in love with the medium that has become my passion and profession. Since graduating I have completed more than 15,000 newspaper and magazine assignments from coast to coast.
Along the way I've learned much about people and light. It's been a fascinating transformation for me. Early on I sometimes found both people and light to be challenging. Today, with thousands of assignments under my belt, I get along with and truly enjoy virtually everyone and I'm able to quickly put people at ease. Light is the essence of photography (the word photography comes from Greek and literally means 'drawing with light'). Where light once intimidated me, I have learned to master it and use it as one of my most important tools.
I've worked for four newspapers in Maine and Massachusetts during my career. At two, I became photo editor and at a third I was acting photo editor for extended periods. In 2000 I went freelance after moving from Boston to Portland, Maine. I currently work regularly for a variety of newspapers, colleges and companies including the Boston Globe, Harvard University, Colby College and the Portland Press Herald. I am part of the adjunct faculty at both the University of Southern Maine and Saint Joseph's College where I teach photojournalism. I'm also a member of the National Press Photographer's Association and the Boston Press Photographer's Association.
I've won numerous first place photo awards in photo contests ranging from state and regional to national and international. I recently won an award of excellence in the newspaper spot news division in the Pictures of the Year International competition for a photo of a Maine game warden facing off against a moose he would ultimately shoot and kill. My work has appeared in numerous magazines including: Time, People, Parade, Sports Illustrated, CFO, Golf Digest, US News & World Report, Newsweek Japan, Time for Kids, and dozens of newspapers throughout the world.
If you're looking for a photographer combining a proven portfolio of consistently strong images with a solid work ethic, creative eye and that critically important intangible known as heart, you've found him. Much has changed in the roughly 25 years since I began, but one very important thing hasn't. I put my heart into everything I did on day one and that's true to this day. Again, thanks for visiting and please feel free to contact me.
